My ladyfriend was laughing at me yesterday when I asked her when "dropped" suddenly became the term to describe the release of an album.

I guess the word's use has been in circulation for quite some time.

Can't wait for Giovanni Antonini conducting Kammerorchester Basel's new recording La Reine to drop.

It kind of makes sense if you think about the resurgence of vinyl. I ‘drop’ a LP on the turntable (albeit very very gently). It’s gone on now to mean ‘release’. Of course how many people say they are going to ‘dial’ a number still....
