His regular-season win percentage at KC was higher than that at St. Louis but he didn’t have the post-season success at KC like he did at St. Louis. His Royals teams just couldn't get past the Yankees in the playoffs.

Within 3 days, we lose Herzog, Ken Holtzman, wife-swapper Fritz Peterson, and Carl Erskine.I didn't know Carl Erskine was still alive; 97 is a great run. I am familiar with him from reading The Boys of Summer decades ago. He seemed like a very very good man. RIP Oisk.

His Royals teams just couldn't get past the Yankees in the playoffs.I wouldn't hold that against him. Overall, those Yankee teams were more talented than the Royals. If you rank the players, George Brett was the best player on either roster but after that the Yankees would dominate the rankings. Herzog got a lot out of these players.

I never will forget seeing the footage of him yanking Garry Templeton off the field after Templeton flipped off the home crowd. Great manager who didn’t put up with nonsense.

Oh I agree. The Yankees were a deeper team. But I wouldn’t discount Amos Otis and John Mayberry and Frank White of the Royals either. And then they finally broke through in 1980 (although they lost to the Phillies in The Series that year. Jim Frey was the manager I believe.)
I am an Orioles fan, and even though the Os had some great teams in the late seventies through ‘83, those Royals teams gave the Orioles fits when they played in Kansas City... as the Royals just ran, ran, ran, and the Os were an old-fashioned team built on pitching and the home run.

I remember those intense playoff series between the Yankees and KC. I was a kid rooting for the Mets so I wanted KC to win. One of the most memorable aspects was when the games were at Yankee Stadium fans would throw trash at the car conveying a KC relief pitcher. Yes relief pitchers were chauffeured to the mound and security did not give a damn fans were throwing debris onto the field.
