Fox News host Sean Hannity called on Arizona Democrats to nix an abortion ban that was reinstated by the state Supreme Court this week.
On Tuesday, the high court reinstated a law that traces back to 1864 and was subsequently codified in 1901. It bans nearly all abortions except those that are needed to save the life of the mother. The decision supersedes Arizona’s 15-week abortion ban, though the state’s Democratic attorney general has said she will not enforce the “draconian” measure.
The decision dropped a day after former President Donald Trump – who said it goes too far – came out against a nationwide ban on abortion in a move that disappointed many anti-abortion advocates but was also praised as politically savvy. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion in 2022, Democrats have leaned into the issue with great success.
Hannity, who opposes abortion, addressed the decision on Wednesday night and called on Democrats to legislate the ban out of existence:
"And the people on the left are so desperate attacking Trump now for an Arizona Supreme Court ruling that upholds what is a Civil War-era law banning abortion. This will be fixed in the next week or two. Let not your heart be troubled. I can pretty much assure that will happen.
"Trump opposes the law and this ruling… And you know what? Arizona’s governor is a Democrat. The state’s attorney general is a Democrat. The state legislature is almost evenly divided. If Democrats– you want to get rid of the law, well, you have a chance right now to get rid of it. And I would advise you, get rid of it!
"They would rather use it as a political tool ahead of November."
Currently, Republicans control each chamber of Arizona’s legislature by two seats. Democrats attempted to repeal the measure on Wednesday but were blocked by Republicans.
That’s because you are choosing purity over doable. The pure position of peo-life is not possible, outside your personal life.
You could bologna slice your way to less abortions by increasing respect for life, but that requires tolerating the idea of abortion existing as a fact.
Quit telling me what my position is, my position right now is focusing on this exuberance and leap to action by the pro-choice members of FR to marginalize the pro-life movement.
I’m telling you the consequences of your position. The pure position is key to giving Democrats a lock on America to turn America into a socialist nation.
You can be pure if you want, but it helps keep Democrats elected.
