I’ve always heard that New York’s water source is superior to most municipalities, coming from the Adirondack snow melt. It seems counterintuitive to everything I’ve thought about NYC.

When I was a kid raising guppies, the understood gold standard for fish tank water was from upstate New York.

NYC water comes mostly (90%) from the Catskill Mountains snow melt and rain. The remainder comes from the first three counties north of NYC on the east side of the Hudson River. No water comes from the Adirondack region.

New York's superb water system is the result of many decades of hard experience, good engineering, and lots of money. It took time, but eventually New Yorkers learned that a great city requires a reliable and abundant supply of good water.
