Well I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear Jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Your so vain, you probably think this post is about you.
There were two total eclipses visible from Nova Scotia in the 1970’s, the second one a few months before the release this song. But the first one was on March 7, 1970, and the other on July 10,1972. The spring eclipse was too early for the racing season in Saratoga, and even the 1972 eclipse was on July 10th occurred three weeks before the racing season opened.
There was a remote patch on Nova Scotia where the paths of totality crossed, and two total eclipses were visible within slightly more than 26 months of each other. Since any point on earth experiences a total eclipse about once every 225 years, this was unusual to say the least. Southern Illinois was on the path of totality in 2017, and will be again today.
Enjoy!
That’s a downer.
