I didn’t know that, however I’ve never been in a towed trailer.

Why the heck was she in the trailer when it was moving?
I’m sure people have done it but pretty common knowledge you aren’t supposed to do that.

Was she a smoker?
Some smokers do all sorts of stuff to be able to light-up.

Airstream doors can be problematic. People have been known to be locked inside. The door is hinged such that it opens into the wind caused by the motion of the trailer being pulled by the tow vehicle. A wind gust could grab a partly opened door and fling it open.
We have a 2018 23’ Airstream and have had several problems with it due to poor engineering and workmanship. I'm handy so have been able to make the repairs. Think twice before buying an Airstream..

I remember even as a kid in the early 60s that passengers in towed trailers were not permitted. I believe this is federal DOT rule. And this was well before airbag, etc. safety hysteria had gotten going. I think seat belts in vehicles were just starting to be installed from the factory.

The Airstreams I’ve seen do indeed have the hinge to the rear, while most RVs always have them in the front, like my Winnebago. So, yes, this death might have been avoided if it was built like most other brands. Still, the door opened because she turned the latch handle. And of course she was illegally riding in the trailer instead of the truck cab.

“Think twice before buying an Airstream.”
Very disappointing to hear that. My grandfather owned several Airstream back in the day. At the time they were wonderful well built trailers. Sad to hear that’s no longer true.

I suppose it would be. At least until the driver has to slam on the brakes and you’re thrown forward at highway speed into the front of the trailer.

I have a 27fb. Legendary airstream quality isn’t. Neither is the engineering. Wally was a salesman only. Like towing an airplane or a beer can. That fragile and airplane repair difficulty and cost.
