EVs are way too heavy, says Stellantis CEO
the street ^ | 4/4/24 | James Ochoa

EVs are really heavy compared to their gas-powered brethren.

The heavy battery packs that power the electric motors in electric cars and enable their long trips between charging sessions tend to be the culprit of bloated EVs, which concerns Stellantis (STLA) CEO Carlos Tavares.

And you’ll need twice the trucks on the road to switch trailers and move lighter freight loads.

Internal Combustion Engine engineers and employees are too heavy a burden for our Corporation. Gotta cut them out.

I’ve known for some time now that Earth’s gravitational pull is increasing.

Evidence:
1. I can’t jump as high as I used to.
2. I can’t lift things I used to.
3. When I fall down, I hit harder and it hurts more.
4. When I step on the scale, it reads higher than it did 40 years ago. (This last is actual measurable data.)

Can be fixed by using an ICE powered vehicle. I especially like the bias in the article:
“enable their long trips between charging sessions”
what long trips? EVs have a pretty short distance between charging sessions.

“While it’s unclear how much the Tesla Semi weighs without a trailer, the truck’s battery pack alone could weigh as much as 11,000 pounds”

Pepsico explains how it uses Tesla Semi electric trucks in glimpse of the future of trucking

Pepsico explained that it uses most of its 21 Tesla Semi electric trucks for deliveries within 100 miles with several stops. They operate for up to 12 hours a day.

Dejan Antunovic, electrification program manager at Pepsico, explained that three of the Tesla Semi trucks are dedicated to long-haul trucking, with routes that vary between 250 to 450 miles.

To support that, Tesla has been installing 750 kW Megachargers at Pepsico facilities. They enable charging to 80% capacity in less than 45 minutes.

Pepsico noted the difficulty of installing that much charging power at a facility and said that they will use what they learned from this experience to plan for future depots that will be electrified.

They get massive tax incentives to put those in. I’ve seen several videos of EV folks traveling around and looking at these charging stations in shopping centers and such - where the chargers are out of order, broken, vandalized, or simply never fully operational. Doesn’t matter. A developer or business owner gets their credits for putting them in (often at not a lot of cost to them, other than lost parking spaces). If they chargers work -they get part of the profits. If the chargers break - thy don’t have to do anything to fix them. They got their tax credits and incentives already.

Imagine a parking deck - with the chargers in the bottom floor - and a car catches fire - parked next to other similar vehicles - and suddenly several lithium-fueld EV fires... takes out the entire deck... yeah.. Great.

I like your thinking. Have you submitted your patent application yet? You could get very rich!

I’m reminded of the old joke (or physics problem) about the five ton truck carrying ten tons of canaries. The driver came to a bridge with a ten ton load limit, so he had to keep getting out and banging his fist on the side of the cargo area to keep half the canaries flying.
