In yet another move that feels designed to tick off long time fans while boosting the returns for short term investors, the San Francisco Giants announced this morning that effective this season, fans ages 17 and under will no longer be permitted to attend games at Oracle Park. Yes, the move is surprising, because Baseball is a kids’ game and the sport has always been a draw for families, but some stark market realities have influenced the decision.
On the condition of anonymity, I exchanged some texts with an unnamed exec in the Giants front office, who had this to say about the move:
The biggest complaint we receive every year is that families are struggling to afford attending games, between our FMV [fair market value] tix, concessions, and parking. We’ve seen that impact walkup business and in park spending before, during, and after games. So we are shifting focus to a sector of the market that has less difficulties.
This is one of the clearest signs that the Giants have jumped into this decision with both eyes opened and fully informed. Unlike some of their other actions this offseason, it’s an explanation, and we don’t have to question the wisdom in it. The team is a moneymaking business and they are simply adjusting to the fact that 17 and unders don’t make them as much money. I asked if there was any concern about losing future generations of fans by preventing them from attending games in person.

April Fools article.
Ya' sure it's an April Fools story? This sounds dead on target for San Francisco....
Go back and read it again. It sounds like a sarcastic jibe about the second to last paragraph.
I could see a lot of cheering if this joke was about airlines doing the same.
It reads like a April Fool joke. Didn’t get past the first two paragraphs.
I remember my Dad taking me to see the Nashville Vols at Sulphur Dell in Nashville in the late 50s. Damn, those were the days.
This is outrageous.
Baseball is no longer America’s favorite past time.....
Yep, kill your future. Stupid move.
What, we are supposed to read the linked article?! That’s not the FR way!
I can’t believe what I just read!
It will backfire bigly.
Better for parents to attend little league games.
MBA decisions have ruined my companies and industries via short term profits over long-term gains.
My best example is Las Vegas Venetian Hotel and the Sands Expo Center, shortly after Adelman’s death, the enterprise was turned it over to the MBAs.
The result was disgruntled staff, poor customer service and short term profits at the expense of long term gains in customer loyalty.
MBA = Magnificent Brainless A$$es
With the enormous money the stars are making today, no wonder the clubs are looking at ways to maximize their receipts.
I have wondered if the new rules with all the time restrictions have affected the concessions. Some games have been shortened by 45 minutes.
I hope I never have to live with only old people...70 myself and I enjoy the young ones...their joy, their laugh their cuteness, their innocence.
