Now, the Philippines and China are playing a dangerous game of armed chicken in the largest disputed territory in the world. The Philippines is not alone, as other countries have had regular run-ins with China over the status of the South China Sea. Thus, the sea is now a contested space as the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan look to counter China’s actions. China’s violation of the territorial integrity of littoral states will only continue and make the region more dangerous unless American deterrence and resolve come to the fore.
