Many of us have stories like that
My first car was a ford wagon followed by a ford maverick and an amc rambler.

First new car I bought was shortly after I got married a ford escort, 4 sped two door 5000 out the door. As an aside I also had a house built and a new child all on 10.05 an hour. Put wife through nursing school and made sure she always had a nice car.
Bought a Mazda 323 off friend at work, perfect shape for 100& with 128k had 298k on it when it was stolen and taken for a joy ride. It was on its last legs burning oil, but wanted to get 323k out of it, regardless I still drove it to the scrapyard and got 300 for it

Thanks for your comment. Sounds like you managed to provide well for your family on so little money. I hope your wife has had a successful nursing career. The only thing a person needs to look for when buying a car is one that will be reliable. It doesn't matter what it looks like, as long as it starts when it's supposed to, and doesn't leave you stranded in no-man's land. I've been very fortunate, none of the cars, used or knew that I owned, no matter how long I owned them, never broke down when I was away from home.

Many years ago my oldest son bought a Mazda hatchback brand new. Not long after he'd picked it up from the dealer, the car died, and it turned out the timing chain had slipped off. He's been a VW guy for at least 30 years now, and only leases them. His biggest problem is where he lives. It's a one way street in Troy, NY, and at least during one winter, the snow plow came through and took his side-view mirror out. Then last year, a drunk driver went on a rampage, and hit a whole bunch of cars parked in front of his brownstone. He had a VW Tiguan at the time, and it got pushed right up onto the sidewalk and into the car in front of him. Six months later, he was parked on one of the side streets across from where he lives, and someone else smashed into his front bumper. And even thought they had to do both body and work on the car's computer after the first accident, the second accident cost more to fix. We can probably thank Biden for that. He's lived in that same area for well over 20 years. He's since traded the Tiguan in for another model.
