The Second City is preparing to open its New York City location in early 2024, drawing attention to one of Chicago’s most prominent yet intangible exports: comedy.
Chicago’s comedy scene has long had a far-reaching reputation, with talent from Tina Fey to Bill Murray tracing their comedic roots to the city. The various stages, training programs and a more affordable cost of living draw many aspiring comedians to get their start in Chicago, over New York or Los Angeles. Improv as it is known today was developed here, and the city’s tourism arm Choose Chicago reports that comedy theaters contribute “significantly” to the tourism industry.
