I disagree with that, I think he was pretty corrupt.

True, Hoover was an anti-communist. He did good work there. But that’s only 1/3 of the story.
Another 1/3 is his decades-long refusal to admit that the Mafia existed. Some say Hoover was blackmailed. Others say he was just shortsighted. No matter. Either way, he completely failed in his duties in that respect.
And the last 1/3? It’s his refusal to step aside and gracefully retire. Much like those ancients in Congress, Hoover became addicted to power. Nothing to admire there.
Which is precisely why today's pathetic little guttersnipes constantly try to beliitle him.
