The Carter funeral is a traditional ceremony which First Ladies attend to honor a deceased First Lady; the First Ladies were the 'honored officials' here with men either not attending or attending to accompany their wives. Therefore, the wives are given the most honored position as they honor a fallen wife. The Bush Sr. funeral is Presidents honoring Presidents and so they take the most honored position to the left, on the aisle.
