I was hiking in the Smokies ~25 years ago and ran across a bear cub just like that. At first I thought it was a big raccoon. But as it stared down at me I realized “Oh, no, that’s a bear cub! What a cute little fellow...” *Rustling in the thick undergrowth on the other side of the trail, with me in the middle* I high-tailed it back down the trail a few hundred yards and then belted out the Star Spangled Banner (couldn’t think of the lyrics to anything else at that instant) just to let the mama bear know I was well out of the way.
