I don’t believe we’ve had an apolitical SOTU in decades. It would be virtually impossible to have an applause line for everyone and every faction.
I agree, his goal was to assure the Democratic base. I’ll add he was also performing for the undecideds.

I didn’t watch the speech (just saw a few clips later on news programs talking about the speech). They said there was nothing in the speech for the Republicans in Congress to applaud—normally a State of the Union speech includes a few segments that everyone can applaud.

That’s what they say. There were a few time Speaker Johnson was applauding while attempting to conceal his hands. Biden was speaking about the border deal that got snatched away. Senator Langford mouthed that’s right. So I’m not sure what speech that network was watching.
