Robinson is popular in NC regardless of race because he is so openly conservative. In the large cities like Raleigh and Charlotte the liberals overwhelm the vote but most of NC is still a conservative state. Democrats in eastern NC crossed to vote for Jesse Helms for years because of shared values.
Some old Democrats are just too stubborn to change party officially but don’t vote with the demons.
