An EMP is often stated to be one of the catastrophic events
that could happen in the future.
Does anyone have any knowledge of what that would do to the implantable difibulators/pacemakers or the people who have them? I’ve been wondering for awhile, as I know several people with them, myself included.

The electronics of pacemakers/defibrillators are packaged within a conductive metal enclosure. Usually made of Titanium. They are tested to withstand a pretty large jolt from an external defibrillation. The device itself will probably be OK.

What you would need to worry about is the other end. The leads that are attached to the heart would pick up the intense RF emissions from the EMP and would likely heat up the end causing a heat ablation. It would burn the heart tissue where it is attached.
