Donald Trump denounced the Alabama Supreme Court for making it “harder” for American families to have children.
The former president took to Truth Social to voice his opposition to the recent ruling that frozen embryos should be considered “children.” He called on Alabama’s state legislature to “find an immediate solution to preserve the availability of IVF in Alabama.” He wrote:
Under my leadership, the Republican Party will always support the creation of strong, thriving, healthy American families. We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America. Like the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans, including the VAST MAJORITY of Republicans, Conservatives, Christians, and Pro-Life Americans, I strongly support the availability of IVF for couples who are trying to have a precious baby. Today, I am calling on the Alabama Legislature to act quickly to find an immediate solution to preserve the availability of IVF in Alabama. The Republican Party should always be on the side of the Miracle of Life – and the side of Mothers, Fathers, and their Beautiful Babies. IVF is an important part of that, and our Great Republican Party will always be with you, in your quest, for the ULTIMATE JOY IN LIFE!
Alabama’s Chief Justice Tom Parker invoked God and the Book of Genesis to justify the decision, writing, “Human life cannot be wrongfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of a holy God.”
Parker continued, “Even before birth, all human beings have the image of God, and their lives cannot be destroyed without effacing his glory.”
Trump has long courted the evangelical vote, winning that demographic by 60 points in 2016 and nearly 70 points four years later, according to the Pew Research Center.
Other Republicans have also spoken out against the decision. Hardline Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said this week:
"Something is totally wrong. People who want to have a family should have the government and the law on their side. And the notion that discarded embryos in an IVF somehow turn these people who want children and want families and want the American dream into criminals is really wrong."
Trump has staunchly supported the evangelical opposition to abortion rights and appointed three conservative justices to the U.S. Supreme Court who voted in 2022 to reverse the constitutional right to abortion by a vote of 6-3. Trump took credit, claiming, “Only I was able to kill Roe vs. Wade.”
Where does "science" say this? And when did it become the purview of scientists to define personhood? The most you can do with science is identify whether something is alive or not and identify it's physical characteristics. It is a scientific fact that human life begins at conception. At that point everything that is necessary for it to develop into a human being is present. Allowed to complete it's natural development, it will not turn into a kidney or lung or an undifferentiated mass of cells, but a human being.
If the y are fertilized then they are, if unfertilized then no.
This stuff is not that hard.
ugh, not thinking. Embryos are of course fertilized.
I actually agree, they are alive. One part of the science that is not a good practice imho. Creating dozens of lives to let only one live is a bit of an ethical conundrum.
does life begin at conception? or not?
Trump is wrong on this. This probably because, like so many other people, he is uniformed on this issue. This is not a pro-life position and someone close to him in the pro-life community needs to set him straight on this. Advocating or even tolerating the murder of human beings, no matter at what stage of development, is flat out wrong.
Stop talking to me.
So you tell God to go pound sand when he CLEARLY say “go forth and multiply”? You seem to think couples don’t have a problem getting pregnant. They HALF to do other forms or else they could risk going to hell. Wake up!
The question, which is a weighty one, is illuminated by genetics. We are who we are, regardless of our "address." As soon as we're conceived, we are a 100-percent identifiable, unique person, with our own, unique, physical genotype--and no other--found in every cell of our body, no matter how small it is. It is not our identity itself, but it is a marker of it that we can detect.
Inside the womb, we have a body that we move autonomously, and a will driven by no other person. This is just as much the case in the womb as it is when we're 5 years old, learning to whistle, or 97, listening to phonograph records. From the moment of our conception and into eternity, we are the same person--that is, someone who was created alive, unrepeatable, and vulnerable to death, made of flesh and capable of autonomous impulses, neural and mental activity (which multiplies its complexity in the womb), and physical motion.
After we're born, our genotype remains the same--identifiable in the nucleus of every one of our body cells. It has been repeatedly shown that, both inside the womb and after he's born, a baby recognizes not only the sound of his mother's voice, but his father's, and the voices of his siblings.
What follows is that we can't morally do to a person before he's born what we can't do to him after he's born. Why? Because being born doesn't change him into something or someone else. His humanity is not there before he is conceived. Yet it is there for eternity once he is conceived.
The Bible doesn’t command us to multiply and Paul said it was better to stay single in the New Testament
WTF? So he really is going back to his ‘kill the babies’ roots. Sad.
Like homosexual marriage, if one state says it is a life, then apply to all? Fair is fair.
No its not. For example fertilized eggs sometime naturally fail to implant and cannot grow, such as when a ectpoc pregnancy occurs.
I’m a people of Alabama. The new ruling is disturbing. I support people who want but can’t have kids, if modern medicine makes it possible.
Who is anyone to stand in their way or make it impossible?
How many sperm die when only ONE can fertilize and egg? The argument is silly. Save it for real babies in the womb.
Sperm is not an organism.
Do you know what an embryo even is? The location does not change the characteristics of what an embryo is or is not.
Very sad.
Not that I count for much, but President Trump has lost my vote.
I will never vote for anyone who tolerates the murdering innocent human beings. Such a person is depraved.
What do sperm cells dying have to do with this topic?
If enough of you AL people don’t like this and gather enough signatures, maybe you could put a resolution on the ballot to change the law. The people of the state have power.
Example: If enough AL people don’t like this and gather enough signatures, they should be able to put a resolution on the ballot to change the law. The people of the state have power.
Anything is better than Big Brother breathing down your neck, today supposedly for good, tomorrow and beyond, for evil.
Which is why Trump called on the Alabama legislature to address the issue.
