I think there was a chance for the peace deal. If Ukraine said Crimea belongs to Russia and Ukraine pledges to remain neutral. I think Putin would have withdrawn the Russian troops by April of 2022.
I get that Zelensky didn't want to reward Putin for seizing Crimea. But it was probably the least of his bad options at that time.
Which is the one the Ukrainians executed as a “traitor” ?
And they later admitted it was a huge mistake.
