Thanks Beowulf9. Perhaps a web search is in order. I do recall that in the 19th c a group of VIPs met in Alaska territory, and some locals obtained red meat (which the VIPs demanded) from a frozen mammoth carcass that was sticking out of some icy hillside. Not sure whether that anecdote is real or memorex though.
Also, the ivory billiard balls of the 19th century were sometimes made of mammoth ivory from the great white north. Not sure about that story either. :^)
Interesting but I was talking about this:
In I Claudius (or maybe Claudius the God) he mentioned (and I don’t know if it’s historically accurate or not) that Caligula had a feast given him and it had a strange animal they found embedded in the ice on the mountaintop, a mammoth. It was roasted and served at the feast.
When I was little and less discriminate in surfing the net, I spent a lot of time on ebay. They had plenty of items made of mammoth ivory. It’s real, though of course not as plentiful as buyers think.
