You aren't fooling anyone with the phony claim that Russia didn't want the whole country: the original plan was obviously to take Kyiv and install a puppet like Medvedchuk and then dismember the country oblast by oblast through more phony referenda presided over by Russian thugs pretending to be locals, just like in 2014.
And Avdiivka is hardly critical to Ukraine's defense: it was a salient that touched Donetsk's suburbs, meaning it was important for possible offensive operations. You gained a few kilometers for tens of thousands of casualties and the Ukrainians have suffered far fewer in Avdiivka than in Bakhmut because they have fought much more intelligently.
