For four years now, either as a physical virus or as a looming threat, the COVID-causing pathogen SARS-CoV-2 has been the elephant in every room—sometimes confronted and sometimes ignored but always present. While once we dreamed of eradicating COVID, now much of society has resigned itself to SARS-CoV-2’s constant presence—a surrender that would once have been unthinkable.
Worldwide, there were more than 11,000 reported deaths from COVID between mid-December 2023 and mid-January 2024, and more than half of those deaths occurred in the U.S. In that same time frame, nearly one million cases were reported to the World Health Organization globally (although reduced testing and reporting means this is likely a vast undercount). In particular, epidemiologists are monitoring the newest variant of SARS-CoV-2, JN.1, and looking for any signs that it may be more severe than previous strains.

There never was a real pandemic, there was only a very bad response to a sometimes severe respiratory ailment, for which some very good treatments were found to have been very effective, but for political reasons having nothing at all to do with public health, were suppressed. Some highly ineffectual procedures and treatments were instituted, resulting in MILLIONS being diagnosed incorrectly as “dying of COVID”, when in fact they died of some untreated co-morbidity, and they died with COVID.
“…or as a looming threat.”
It looms…
Even Spanish flu burned itself out after a couple years.
The only reason Covid is still a thing is because the left won’t let it die. They are still using it as fear porn to whip up hysteria as if it were the Black Death or Ebola, so some other highly fatal actual disease.
So more than half of the deaths in the current cycle are in the US.
Why is that?
Was the virus designed to target Americans or is our testing system more sensitive?
If you think about it now, your crazy uncle was probably right.
A John Bircher maybe…
Conspiracy theorist…
The money isn’t backed by gold…
I agree.
But I wonder. Are they actually that delusional? I think many are.
Pandemic of stupidity.
One of the challenges is being able to call it a pandemic when nobody is dying.
Exactly correct.
Plus a big LOL
I had a five day cold 13 years ago. Period
Does that count as rampant?
Ben, Srednik here.
Right on. The only pandemic is excessive deaths due to the vaccine.
WHO woulda thunk WHO would be fostering panic?
Pretty much. Three days of dry coughing and fatigue for unvaxxed me, three days of a standard cold for my vaxxed husband.
Go get another booster asap
that way you can know that when you get the covid it will be much more mild that it could have been
An extra 4 days of paid vacation...
A Meme tweet I saw a month or so ago sums it up the best:
“I sincerely believe that many people’s lives are so boring that they desperately NEED this coronavirus situation to be real.
They need it so they can LARP around pretending that they’re surviving the end of the world.
For many, this is the most interesting event of their lives”
“Just to be safe, I am wearing a mask and also standing six feet from my computer while reading this article”
You’re not safe if you’re not wearing goggles with 3 dozen jabs under your belt.
I too was a Scientific American groupie.
Along with National Geographic, Nature and Smithsonian.
All of these great journals of science have been captured by the loonie Left.
I dumped my subscriptions to them about twenty years ago when it became obvious that they had decided that science must serve the political agenda of Socialism.
Scientific American is unscientific and un-American.
