Thanks. I saw this one on another thread a few days ago. The plane is thirty-two years old so I don’t think this can be placed on a poor design or sloppy manufacturing. This is surely an issue with Delta’s maintenance. (They took delivery of that plane in February 1992.)

Say what you will about the 737 MAX, but I don’t think anyone would argue that the 757 is a bad design or has a poor safety record. It’s one of the best out there. Had it not been for the industry downturn after 9/11, it would be selling well in today’s market now that “long and thin” routes have beaten the “hub and spoke” model. The 757 was ahead of its time. That’s why airlines are holding onto them as long as possible. Right until the wheels literally fall off!

(Actually, I think the plane was returned to service the next day. In fact, it will be flying from Atlanta to the US Virgin Islands tomorrow morning.)

I suspect it’s more about the industrial culture of the company and that starts at the top.

If the proper standards, rules and habits aren’t enforced by management it will most likely begin to be taken advantage of.

Cutting corners in aviation is completely unacceptable and can be deadly. If that begins to happen it can spread through the workforce like a virus and bad things happen.......trust me, I’ve seen it first hand and it ain’t pretty.
