One thing that is different than 60 - 90 years ago, is the respect for standards and codes of conduct that was - relative to today - much greater back then.

Because most of us had been taught better and knew we would get our butts torn up when we got home if we got in trouble. But more importantly we had a conscience. We could be humbled, embarrassed and humiliated if necessary. We could be ashamed for bad behavior. If we could not our bottoms would at least be smarting.

The standards were not complicated at all. We didn't need a student handbook an inch thick for it. Simple decency, common courtesy and common sense would do.
