Classical liberals like to believe that the difference between the classical liberal period of Burke, the founding fathers of the US, etc. and now is that back then they had a republic but now we have something more like direct democracy.

The real difference is back then only propertied males, i.e. those with skin in the game, voted for their representatives.

This is why the US is ultimately doomed as there is no way we can go back and limit the vote to those who would choose wise leaders and policies
