I think Ronald Reagan and GW Bush were the only recent Presidents I know who chose a running mate who they thought could actually take the “Commander in Chief” role if something happened to them (GHW Bush under Reagan and Dick Cheny under GWBush).
Most often V.P. picks have not been successors to the President they served and sometimes I think some Presidents prefer it that way (avoids an over-ambitious V.P. under them).
I think Biden chose Harris because he could check two “idenity” boxes with her - woman and “minority” - and with ZERO other consideration.
I think Trump will not pick a V.P. who would be so great that they could be seen as a successor. Ben Carson would be good for electoral reasons and fit that bill.
I’m wondering if Byron Donalds would be a good selection for VP? Or maybe he’s too young at this point?
