running rigging

Rigging used to manipulate sails, spars, etc. in order to control the movement of a sailing vessel. Contrast standing rigging.
standing rigging
Rigging that supports masts and spars and is not manipulated during normal operations. Contrast running rigging.
This is a model of USS Constitution. The black thread is the standing rigging while the light thread is the running rigging.
Standing rigging was generally coated in tar to preserve the rope hence it being black.
The pennant at the top of the main mast is the commissioning pennant.
