Our military, repatriated from our various bases around the world, would be the only hope to keep some form of American civilization intact.

With time to prepare for this, could they do it ?

Good question. If you examine the work of our military in the 20th Century, we got caught by surprise more often than not. We didn't have much time to prepare.

But we're good at improvising. I think it was Patton who said, "If we don't know what the hell we're doing, how is the enemy going to figure it out?"
