If the owner pays any taxes associated with the property, how in Hades do squatters have a legal leg to stand on?!

They don’t....however in this case when the police showed up they produced fraudulent documentation stating they had a right to live there.
The police wouldn’t make a decision on the paperwork which meant the rightfully owners had to go through civil court.
All that takes time so the squatters lived free until then.
Knowing they would eventually get kicked out they trashed the place out of spite......the 2nd home in a row they got kicked out of BTW.
