You have it ass backward, the Russians liberated the ethnic Russian part of Ukraine that was being targeted for persecution and death by neo-Nazis.
The only reason that area *IS* Russian dominated is because of the Holodomor, and the forced repopulation of the area by ethnic Russians by Lenin and Stalin.
