Wells Cathedral is known in the art/architecture world for the very unusual “strainer arches” at the crossing that were installed in the 14th Century because the pillars under the crossing tower were found to be unstable without additional support.
Once in a while my Art History classes still pay dividends. I get the old, “How do you know about THAT?” How, indeed?
Fascinating! One of the most interesting books I have read was ‘Pillars of the Earth’ by Ken Follet. (I know, fiction. But riveting historical fiction). Those ancient cathedrals are marvels.
Ha ha I even know what “flying buttresses” are.....One of the tiny drawers in my memory just reminded me.
