A small diesel engine is a natural battery charger! Powerful, quiet, relatively inexpensive.
WHASSAMATTER, AUTO INDUSTRY?
I've been saying this for well over a decade now. Diesel electrics are proven tech. Diesel engines are also more efficient than traditional gasoline engines. Imagine how efficient they'd be running at their optimum rpm all the time, with none of that start/stop stress on the engines. You could probably still get the efficiency with a small onboard battery that would primarily be used for starts.
The problem is, "environmentalists" (who are normally just commie watermelons) hate diesel engines.
Here is Edison Motor’s Hybrid Diesel Electric Semi, pulling a Sherman Tank for its very first load... Total vehicle weight: 100,700 lbs

“You made me hate my truck!” LOL!
“Diesel electrics are proven tech.”
Yep, in locomotives and subs for how long? Also, wouldn’t a diesel electric eliminate the need for a transmission? Not a bad deal.
Roger that!
Diesel/electric hybrid is THE way to go!
We outnumber the environmentalist whackos - all we have to do is outvote them!
