Monumental Sports and Entertainment’s move to Virginia for a new home arena for the Wizards and Capitals is sparking conversation about D.C.’s crime crisis and whether the District’s rise in crime is one reason for MSE’s decision to relocate to the City of Alexandria.
Although no one from Monumental Sports and Entertainment (MSE) has said publicly if D.C.’s crime crisis is a reason why they want to build a new arena in the Potomac Yard neighborhood of Alexandria, some people are wondering if rising crime is a contributing factor.
7News asked Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and a D.C. City Council member, is rising crime in the District why the Washington Wizards and Capitals are looking to move to Virginia?
“I think they mainly looked at Virginia because we're open for business. I think that the governor has shown that, but I would say from just an 80,000-foot view it is clear to me that crime is having an impact in the District in its entirety. I've heard from so many Virginia residents that have said they used to enjoy going into the District, going to the Kennedy Center going to different movie theaters or plays or entertainment or restaurants. And now they try to avoid the District, particularly at night with the rash and carjackings and murders and robberies. So I think there has generally been for so many Virginia residents that are commuting to the District and live in the D.C. suburbs a sense of fear of that they can't go into the District and feel safe.”

Will the names remain the same? Will this change where these organizations pay taxes?
The Wizards were once the Washington Bullets. I’m sure the name was apt.
I was reading some farticle today by some moron who said crime is not on the rise in America. The moron said the “media” (their “media”) is over reporting crime. LOL! Geez. It’s a good thing America has a lot of boneheads. They are needed to do “da news” for the Dung Beetle Party.
developments like this just destroy new areas
Seen it happen over and over again. Businesses move out to new farmland or the ‘nice’ part of town and like a black mold, the dirtbags just follow the new shiny developments and in 5-10 years the nice areas are ruined. Repeat the process over again, and continue ruining more areas.
Rural areas are absolute fools to allow businesses and developments to come in and change the “character” of their area.
I'm sure the reason has more to do with the rise of sea level, caused by Global Warming. Which in turn is the fault of white males.
Wizards heck do they mean Imperial Wizards of the Ku Klux Klan...sarc
Bring back the Houston Colt .45s and the San Antonio Gunslingers.
They had the Big “E”. Enjoyed those games against Jack Sikma!
Mom allowed me to stay up late. Good Basketball.
Dumb question...
Like observing the smoking ruins at Pearl Harbor and asking whether the japs were responsible...
DC is a violent criminal playground controlled by a criminal DC government and a criminal federal government...
##########################
Probably. Customers wouldn’t brake the DC crime gauntlet.
And the Buffalo Braves.
I can remember when the idea of changing the name from Bullets was supposed to solve the violent crime in DC. Liberals actually believed the name of a basketball team influenced crime.
The were once the Baltimore Bullets.
Lawlessness in the streets reflects lawlessness in the local government. Aggressive law enforcement is a threat from the top on down.
At this point in time in civilization good, functional , productive government should be beyond debate a
Yes. I feel sad for the restaurants and businesses in that neighborhood. I enjoyed patronizing them.
To the first question, not a chance. Before they played in DC, they played in Landover, MD. To the second question, yes. They will pay taxes to Virginia, not DC.
