The casting wasn't the problem, or rather wasn't the major problem. The writing reminded me of what was done to Indiana Jones and Luke Skywalker by ideological stooges: turn a former hero into a contemptible chump and displace him with something more acceptable to The Message. And by all reports Tennant was delighted to do it.
