I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the six-hundred-fifty-seventh day of the war.
Day 657: Dec 12
Today, there are a lot of updates from the Avdiivka direction. Here, the most intense clashes took place in the central part of the region. The increase in the intensity of attacks was rather rapid, as the region was largely characterized by sporadic Russian reconnaissance-in-force operations over the last weeks.
As you remember, when Russian forces entered the territory of the demolished industrial zone, they put themselves in a very inconvenient situation, as all buildings were already destroyed by artillery fire, and the Russian infantry had little to no cover from Ukrainian fire. The industrial zone, therefore, quickly became a kill zone, and Russian forces incurred substantial losses in their attempts to consolidate control over the region. That is why, as reported by Russian sources, Russian forces decided to take time to regroup to prepare fresh troops to resume assault operations.
While waiting for these reinforcements, Russian troops that were holding the positions in the industrial zone received supplies via the first Russian ground drones. This way, they could minimize the exposure and, therefore, losses from Ukrainian drone attacks. Unfortunately for Russians, Ukrainian fighters recently published a video showing that they finally found and destroyed it.
In order to distract Ukrainian forces and draw their attention away from the Russian bridgehead, Russian forces started attacking Ukrainian positions in the forest north of the industrial zone. Russian sources published a video showing how they are shelling Ukrainian fortifications. Simultaneously, it was reported that the reinforcements continued to arrive at this front in order to restart the ground operations.
Today, some Russian sources claimed that Russians finally resumed ground operations and penetrated the Ukrainian defense west of the industrial zone by hundreds of meters. Russian sources claimed that Ukrainians were caught by surprise and had to retreat along Kolosova Street. It is important to note there is still no visual evidence of such a success.
The Ukrainian side reported that even though the number of Russian assaults spiked, Russian assault units failed to achieve any success and were completely eliminated.
Moreover, Ukrainians were tightly controlling the accumulation of Russian troops in the region. Ukrainian fighters from the famous 110th Mechanized Brigade showed how they targeted Russian forces concentrations. In order to undermine Russian offensive capabilities, the drone pilots destroyed 1 howitzer, 2 tanks, and multiple small infantry groups. Ukrainian fighters from the Border Guard Detachment were also heavily concentrated in this region. Geolocated footage shows that they managed to destroy another tank, an armored vehicle, a howitzer, a small ammunition depot, and a group of soldiers.
So, the front line in this region is kept stable. In fact, the entire Avdiivka front line has finally stabilized over the last month, especially along the southern line, where Russians have not generated any gains over the last 7 weeks. That is why the Russian High Command continues to characterize Russian offensive efforts in Avdiivka as “active defense”. It is interesting that the confidence of the Russian Command in their ability to take Avdiivka was low from the very beginning, so in an effort to temper expectations, they call it active defense, despite the fact that Ukrainian forces have never conducted offensive operations at scale in the Avdiivka area since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
Since it has already become clear that Russian forces will definitely not be able to take Avdiivka by the end of the year, Russians have already started using the “active defense” framing to recontextualize the lack of any major Russian progress around Avdivka. Several days ago, some of the most prominent Russian sources started claiming that the Avdivka offensive was just a decoy and that taking it is not the main Russian goal. And this is not surprising because out of the allocated 40 thousand troops as reserves for the Avdiivka offensive, approximately 13 thousand of them are already dead or wounded. It seems like the Russian command is not confident that the remaining 27 thousand troops will be enough to close the pocket, which is why they are trying to deprioritize this direction, meaning that, so far, the Ukrainian defensive operation is going according to the plan.

Ukraine is not going to give up its territories in exchange for the end of the war, because Ukrainians live there and are being tortured by the occupiers. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting with media representatives following the negotiations with U.S. President Joseph Biden in Washington.
Answering the question about the statement of certain individuals that Ukraine should cede certain territories for the sake of ending the war, the Head of State reminded that Ukrainian citizens, including children, live in the territories temporarily occupied by Russia and remain Ukrainians.
“Our people live there, families live there, children live there, and all of this is part of Ukrainian society. We are talking about living people. They are being tortured, raped, and killed. We are well aware of this,” he said.
“And to those individuals who suggest giving up our territories... How do you give up your people? The question is not only about land, the question is about living people, their fates, their stories, the question is about these families, their children. Should we give up territories, give up children? I don’t know who is talking about this... I have one question for them: are they willing to give their children into the hands of terrorists? I don’t think so,” the President added.
Answering the question of whether the Head of State had heard what he wanted from President Joseph Biden and the U.S. Congress today regarding support for Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted: “I said exactly what I wanted to say. I feel the support of President Biden’s administration, I also felt it today from the senators - we talked about it. And we talked to the Speaker. All these signals were there. They were more than positive. But we know that there are words and there are concrete results. We will wait for a better result.”
The President also stated that Ukraine has a specific goal and a clear plan, but he cannot disclose the details of operations in 2024 publicly.

It’s going to keep weapons and ammunition flowing without interruption to the brave Ukrainian fighters and continue delivering economic and humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian people.
This so-called supplemental funding addresses the needs of the Ukrainian military during the crucial weeks and months ahead. And it begins — it begins to transition to longer-term security assistance that’s going to help Ukraine deter and continue to defend against Russian aggression.
This assistance would provide even more artillery, armored vehicles, anti-armor systems, anti-air capabilities that have been used so effectively thus far on the battlefield by the Ukrainian warriors.
You know, and it’s going to deliver much-needed humanitarian assistance as well as food, water, medicines, shelter, and other aid to Ukrainians displaced by Russia’s war, and provide aid to those seeking refuge in other countries from Ukraine.
It’s also going to help schools and hospitals open. It’s going to allow pensions and social support to be paid to the Ukrainian people so they have something — something in their pocket. It’s also going to provide critical resources to address food shortages around the globe.
