This is what happens when a ideological group with political power gets routed... Many of the folks aren’t true believers but join for personal gain and power...
Once they realize they will indeed wind up dead for a cause they truly aren’t committed to, they tend to decide surrender is a better option.
Sadly these prisoners will be treated humanely, when the reality is this entire organization needs utter obliterated... not a single person who was part of the org or supports fundamentalist islams tenants should be left breathing in the Gaza strip when this is one..
