Chevy Chase came onto the scene as an original SNL cast member and rode the lightning as SNL became a late-night juggernaut literally overnight. Definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time. He was able to parlay his rather brief SNL stint into a movie career (with a good number of flops). The only thing he did memorable in the movies was those National Lampoon Vacation movies. Though not a fan of Chevy overall, I must say that he was perfectly cast for the role of Clark Griswold.

Other than his Weekend Update spot, one is hard pressed to remember successful skits with the other players. His interpretation of "accident-prone" then-President Ford was stupid and makes for cringe-worthy watching today. Especially in light of the fact we have a current occupant of the White House who makes Ford look like a graceful ballet dancer - yet today's SNL doesn't even touch on it.

When he left SNL for the movies, his replacement Bill Murray was much better (and had a more successful film career).
