Men in the Middle East have worn long flowing robes for centuries.
Thobes or dishdashas protect the wearer from the brutal heat of the desert while maintaining modesty.
On Wednesday night, Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis called them 'man dresses,' mystifying or insulting a swath of the globe at a stroke.
Social media quickly lit up as users poked fun at his casual dismissal of the clothing worn by men in Iraq and much of the Middle East.
The bizarre moment came during the fourth Republican debate when DeSantis, the governor of Florida, was asked about his pledge to send troops to the southern border to shoot anyone crossing the border carrying the deadly drug fentanyl.
He compared it with his time when he served as a lawyer with the U.S. Navy.
'When I was in Iraq, al Qaeda wasn't wearing a uniform,' he said.
'You'd see anyone walking down the street ... they all had man dresses on.
'You didn't know if someone had a bomb, an [improvised explosive device] attached or not.
'And so you had to make a judgement based on intelligence ... based on positive identification.'
He may have been making an important point about how terrorists and drug smugglers blend into the local population.

Nice history, but even so, if you look at Scotland today, you can see that those dresses are DEFINITELY affecting their manhood. For example for every child in Scotland, there is a DPS-like ‘case manager’ who is watching and making sure that the parents raise their kid properly. And the leaders they elect in Scotland...some of the worst in the world.

Awwww...did you get your feewings hurt?
Seriously, that was pathetic. Like it or not, politics is blood sport.
You better toughen up if something that minor bothers you.
You probably wouldn’t vote for Trump because “mean tweets”...
Fing pathetic.
“...you can see that those dresses are DEFINITELY affecting their manhood.”
For crying out loud, they have been wearing those kilts for centuries. It is not the kilts, it the same thing that is happening here. And now the kilts are only for special occasions.
I go into hardware stores, etc., and if there are any young white men, and I don’t see many young white men and women anymore, they are passive, distracted, kind of strange persons.
I saw two “normal” boys not long ago working in a supermarket and I was surprised.
Do Chinese, Korean, Japanese, most in India, most in Africa, most in Western Europe, most in North and South America continue to dress as folks there did for centuries? No. But we are to somehow “respect” Arabs for continuing today to dress like ancient bedouins. No.
I suppose judicial robes and clerical robes are man dresses in a sense. But this story is not worth any kerfluffle. Veterans tell their stories with the words that were used in the situation. No matter what war they are recalling.
At least he didn’t mention diaper heads.
