Wow! The Ballroom at Cipriani. When I belonged to the NYYR (1996-1997) we were lucky if we had 20 members and we struggled to get guest speakers.
We met in the back room of a bar on West 57 Street (Kennedy’s) until the Irish-born owner found out we were Republicans and he threw us out! After that, we met in the back room of The Yorkville Inn (now gone) on the upper east side.
Membership was all young lawyers but for yours truly. All were really Democrats who just wanted to pay less taxes.
OMGosh....I LOVE that story.
What a time to be in NYC...and, especially as a member of NYYR.
The things you saw/experienced - saw CHANGE, and, could tell....lol!!
I wonder if they have scrap books we could just sit and go through. Would love to do that, someday.
Thx for sharing.
Re: Kennedy’s.
I was on a Bose junket to NYC some 20 years ago and had a couple of hours to kill, so I wandered around. Stopped at Kennedy’s for lunch. Great food, huge portions and cheap prices. I’ve mentioned it to my wife many times.
If I’d known about the owner’s proclivities I would’ve bypassed it, but no!
Still, small world.
