All sounds so familiar. I remember the race riots at Travis and it was no picnic at NKP or DaNang either. You had to be careful where you went after hours both on and off base.

I got DDA'd to a supply squadron after bombing out of language school at Monterey. I experienced reverse racism to the max there. All of the NCOs were black and my first APRs were 7s and 8s because I "needed experience". The two black guys that also DDA'd with me got straight 9s. I got the sh!t TDYs also which turned out to be good.

They wanted me out of there and my career soared after I crosstrained into ICBM maintenance where actual performance mattered more than race.

It did not get much better. In 2014 I managed a detachment of Sailors assigned to a Marine Base. Our Commanding Officer was dual hatted as the OIC of a separate Marine Detachment. I did not answer to his Marine Detachment Senior Enlisted (black SNCO). The SNCOs first act as Senior Enlisted was to call all the black NCOs and Staff NCOs to monthly private meetings. My team was small and I told him he had to meet with all of my Sailors or none. He tried to go around me. He failed. He could not grasp that we were a separate detachment not under his management we just shared an Officer. Had a similar incident with a Navy Officer (black) who tried the same thing. He was on a racism fishing expedition. Looking for bullets for his annual report, maybe a medal or promotion. I held a Chiefs call with my Sailors and put a stop to it. There are hundreds of stories like this, yet the DOD is busy weeding out all those white supremacists in the military.
