My Dad took me to the Apple Cup in 1975. Warren Moon and Spider Gaines brought the Dawgs back from a 13 point deficit with 3 minutes to go. I was hooked.
Spent 7 years at the UW getting three degrees. Went to most of the games. Went to the Rose Bowl in 1981.
My parents had two season tickets. Starting around 1996 or so, as my mom got too ill to go, I started taking my Dad. She passed in 2000. He passed in 2004.
I kept the tickets for a few years, taking friends and my kids. But it eventually got to be too much hassle (I live well over an hour’s drive south of Seattle), so I gave them up.
I turned 64 this year. For my birthday, my kids got us all tickets to this year’s Apple Cup. 48 years after my first one.
Absolutely gorgeous late fall day. The weather was perfect. The game less so, but the Huskies won on a last second field goal. As the Dawgs’ last regular season Pac-12 game, it was a historic game to attend.
Sure glad they beat the Ducks again. And hoping they do well in the playoffs!
I’ve been a Husky fan since Charlie Browning played. Hell, Congressman Norm Dicks even played back then. Coach Owens, to the new guy. Of course The Dogfather was the best, and a good guy to boot. This team beat Oregon in a close game, then as I watched the Ducks(I hate that team) tear up the rest of their games, I thought UW would lose to them. I didn’t lose faith, but I had a sinking feeling. Tonight, was glorious. To tell you the truth, Oregon is better than Ohio State, Michigan and every but Georgia. Except the Huskies have their number. They should have cancelled this game, called the Huskies champions, and both should be in the final 4. It isn’t fair, it is like someone having to play Bama twice to get in, a few years ago. They are in the same division, being undefeated, and beating the other team should end this. I am not finished wanting to watch Bo Nix though. He is a wonder, and the offense is gorgeous to watch.
Thanks for letting my UW team beat you...twice....you guys are worthy opponents, but not worthy enough.
Not their fault, and I wish they would have just went back to the PAC 10 and let USC and UCLA go away. PAC 8 even. Utah is likely to be king dog on the West now. They have a great coach..
If you want to play with the big dogs, you have to play on the East coast. Not their fault, or my fault. They tried to bring in Texas and Oklahoma, but they didn’t bite. That was when the writing was on the wall.
I am happy there are a lot of Dawg fans on this forum. College football is superior to the Pro game of today. More entertaining, and more fun. It is more like the NFL game of the 60’s 70’s and even 80’s. Fun, wide open and enjoyable.
Great story. I graduated (finally) from the UW in 1981. Drove down to the Rose Bowl that year with some friends and watched the Huskies lose to Michigan. Butch Woolfolk, who later played for the New York Giants, had a great game that day.
I remember watching the 1959 Rose Bowl on TV with my Dad. We beat Wisconsin handily that year. Our QB was Bob Schloredt. I was able to meet him many years later when my son played on the same soccer team as his nephew.
I watched many games in Husky Stadium, and used to go to the game early in the 70s to watch Rob Weller, who later received credit for starting the “wave”, get the audience into the correct mood before the game.
Watched Warren Moon play his last game in Husky Stadium. Before that, watched the Steelers and the Jets play there in an exhibition game around 1972. Bradshaw and Namath played about one quarter each.
I remember Spider Gaines. He was a great wide receiver, but unfortunately dropped a pass when we played Alabama in Husky stadium that would have won the game for us. The pass unfortunately hit has facemask.
This year was something special ... just didn’t think the Huskies could beat the Ducks a second time.
Lots of wonderful memories out there from when America was still America.
I missed it, but thank goodness my DVR grabbed it.
The CFP may be a dud compared to some of these rivalry/conference championship games. Do any/all of the remaining undefeated’s get tossed out of the cfp if they lose today? Then what?
If Alabama beats Georgia it will shake things up. Washington must be in undefeated and they played a tough schedule. I don’t see Michigan or Texas losing today but one never knows. If Bama wins how can they be in and Texas out…. When Texas beat Alabama?!
Congratulations Washington!
I love the yummy rat poison (typed in my best Nick Saban accent) of many people predicting Georgia to win. Just like with the SEC championship game in 2021.
If they pick the "best teams"...in order I'd go with...
Georgia, Alabama, Washington, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas-Florida St.(tossup, if they both win)
Yeah, I know Texas beat Alabama, and Alabama has had it's struggles...but it's still SatanSaban/Alabama.
Harbaugh has Bo disease in Bowl Games, many folks here think last years team was better...and look what happened against TCU?(Michigan's interim coach, Sherrone Moore, may have a better pulse for this team, he won the tough ones)
Day is Ohio State's Achilles' heel, he had Georgia by the short ones and blew it....and how do u lose 3 straight to your arch rival when you've had superior/5-star talent in all three? Still, their talent alone could do damage in the CFP.
Alabama doesn't look like the dominant team they've been in the recent past...but if they smoke Georgia???
What Washington did was impressive, you beat a team like Oregon twice in one season, and doing so(in the PAC12 championship) even after the momentum had shifted after blowing a pretty big lead?...that's a pretty darn good team with a good QB. Playing ANY (even Georgia) team in a PAC12 friendly Rose Bowl...????
5 minutes into the second quarter of the Texas Ok St game. Score is 28 t 7 for Texas. Alabama is not going to the big show.
Well, Texas has won so that’s one box checked.
I think there are going to be two teams left out of the playoff regardless of todays results. I don’t see any way OSU gets in. And FSU may get squeezed out win or lose. If Georgia / Michigan / FSU win… add Washington and you’re done. If Bama beats UGA?! What then?
How can you take OSU over Michigan - assuming a Michigan loss - when UM just beat OSU last week? If Michigan loses both UM and OSU are OUT.
Honestly i would of over to see UM lose - kudos to Iowa if they do it - and that would really throw a k key wrench in the works. If that happens I think you have to exclude both UM and OSU.
Depending on the outcome of the remaining games the only thing I would say for certain right now at 4 PM Eastern time is that Washington is IN.
One thing, you don’t have to worry about your team moving to another city / state.
I would say Alabama is down this year…. But an Alabama down year does not necessarily corrrespond with other program’s down years.
I hope all the changes to format, conferences, etc. next year lead to a better product...NIL should help keep talent in the NCAA, opting out early for the pros was starting to show signs of a lower quality product. The new Big Ten certainly will be... interesting.
Simple, maybe because U Mich had the best defense in college football and the 2nd best in pass defense, allowing only 144 yds. per game?
OSU had the best pass receiver in college football in Harrison Jr.. So it's natural that U of M is going to focus on him in their pass defense. Harrison had one interception early in the game and only 118 yards total for the game.
Having the best receiver in college football isn't going to guarantee you anything when you're going up against the best pass defense in college football.
