Advertisers Say They Do Not Plan to Return to X After Musk’s Comments
Twitter/X ^ | Dec 1 | xDaily

Posted on 12/01/2023 2:02:38 PM PST by RandFan

Key Points:

- Numerous marketing agencies representing major brands have decided not to resume advertising on X following Elon telling them to GFY

- Temporary advertising pauses on X are likely to become permanent, with Musk's comments providing little incentive for a return. Lou Paskalis, CEO of AJL Advisory, highlights the reputational risk involved.

- Elon’s history of alienating advertisers, including threatening those who paused spending over content moderation concerns, has compounded the issue.

- Over 200 advertisers paused their campaigns on X after Musk's replying to an antisemitic comment and the presence of ads near pro-Nazi content.

- Musk's remarks at the DealBook Summit in New York, criticizing advertisers and accusing them of "blackmail," further escalated tensions.

- Linda Yaccarino, X's CEO, attempted to mitigate the situation by focusing on Musk's apology and appealing for advertisers to return, emphasizing X's commitment to free speech.

- Skepticism remains among advertisers, with Ruben Schreurs of Ebiquity noting that a significant shift in leadership or company policy may be required to attract them back.

- Tom Hespos of Abydos Media has advised clients to completely withdraw from X, citing ethical considerations.

- The situation poses a challenge for X, especially as the year-end is a peak advertising period. Major brands like Apple, Disney, and IBM have paused their campaigns, while some, including the NFL and The Athletic, remain.

- Musk's stance, risking the platform's financial stability, reflects his dismissiveness towards advertiser concerns. Steve Boehler of Mercer Island Group notes the resultant perception of Musk as a risky partner for brands.

Situation critical.

Freepers, perhaps you should consider subscribing.

I'm on the Premium+ plan if we all did that it would help.

I agree, they shouldn’t advertise on X where they get billions of views, they should advertise on CNN where they get 700,000 views. Dumb SOBs

I canceled my Walmart+ membership today. I will not support the companies that boycott X.

When they need something he has they’ll come running back. Like global internet access, or space launches.

Ebiquity, Abydos Media, Mercer Island Group?

Maybe I am just out of touch, but I never heard of these people.

Is this just taking comments from some unknowns that push the narrative, and pretending it is a wide-held belief?

Doubt “X” is dependent on the hypocritical advertisers. Probably turn out to be the other way around.

Disney will be back in a month or so after the hostile takeover concludes and Bob Iger gets kicked to the curb.

As Elon said— “the world will see” meaning how stupid these SOBs are. And his classic retort to the extortionists who think they should support worthless media. Go..F.., well you know. He’s right in this case. “Hi Bob”... to Bob Disney Paedo Iger. Losers of major amounts of cash.

They’ll return when the deep-state political campaign against X and Musk is over and the coast is clear for them.

If Musk isn’t worried about this why should anyone else be?

I keep hoping Disney will get so desperate they will sell off a theme park or two...wouldn’t it be cool to see “MAGA World”?

This will get fun as the abandoning advertisers will now find their other ads amplified on Twitter where they won’t be able to respond. Imagine thousands of individuals screenshotting Apple of IBM or Microsoft ads flanked by anti-Semitic, sexist or racist posts. Perhaps even thousands of individuals will create phantom accounts as eneMediaMatters did in order to facilitate those screenshots.

“MAGA World” should be the whole country and not just a theme park!

Hugs n’ love!

This will be an interesting experiment. Will the companies that stop advertising on X see any drop in sales? If not, will they cut back their advertising on social media generally?

I’ve never consciously bought anything because of advertising on social media. I’ve clicked through sometimes to look, but I’ve never bought. Purchases are always done by searching once I’ve decided to buy something.

Maybe most people impulse buy stuff because of social media ads, but I’m skeptical as to how well it works.

I’m not sure of Musk’s plan by telling advertisers to f-off, but if Musk does want Twitter to continue, he certainly has the wealth to keep it alive for decades (providing, of course, that he cashes out of Tesla).
