I agree with him on Family Circus. I never liked that comic strip. And Garfield.
They are both pablum, but this is a woke article and nothing is funny to the woke person.

Just like a TV network, a good comics page has something for everyone. Family Circus is not supposed to be "bust a gut" funny, and you are probably NOT the target audience. Mildly amusing and reaffirming was what Bil Keane aimed for, and he got it.
Garfield is a zombie comic strip, but people read it the way they watched the color episodes of Andy Griffith.

It is absolutely true that humor varies so widely, even within the same culture.
I never really read Family Circus, but I did relate to certain things...but it was kind of tame.
Never liked Garfield. Or Nancy. I was the kind of kid who loved “Johnny Quest”...that stuff just lit my kid brain on fire.
I did like some of the Al Capp stuff, too. I did like Sad Sack, though I thought Sarge always had a pair of fat buttocks protruding from where his belly was supposed to be!
