Yeah, but couldn’t, or shouldn’t ai be able to write a song in the style of say a famous singer? With art ai, you can input something like “a watercolor scene of a boat on water in the style of JW Turner” (or degas, or whoever you like) and get some fairly good results. I’ve done a bunch of ones in the trippy style of Marc Chagall that look pretty decent and have that chagall feel to them-

Maybe it’s different with music though

Well, say you tell an AI to mimic the Beatles... you’re not going to get something that sounds like a new Beatles song. You’re going to get something that sounds like someone mimicking the Beatles, and we already have 1000 mediocre songs like that written by humans.

What made the Beatles the Beatles was being able to create a new Beatles song, that didn’t sound quite like any other Beatles song, and to create it “out of thin air”. But an AI can’t make anything out of thin air. It can only recapitulate, and if you are telling it to mimic a style, it will only recapitulate in predictable ways, which is even less creative.

“Maybe it’s different with music though”

Music is an entity in itself. Music was being written before they knew what they were doing. Rameau, a frenchman, and Froburger, a german, started to develope music theory in the mid 1720’s. But before anything was defined, JS Bach died in 1750 so he never had much of a chance to study the theory of music. So if something isn’t defined, AI can’t use it properly at least.

And when you consider the first known composers of classical music were Hermannus Contractus and Hildegard Von Bingen, they were on their own. Contractus was an 11th century monk who composed hymns and chants that are believed to be some of the earliest classical music. And they were working with voice only as only sticks and hands were the music instruments of the time and had no melody, just percussion. AI would go blank.
