There are ways to retrieve this for your specific machine... I can’t give you much more than that right now, but an internet search helped me out. I think it has to do with signing into to a microsoft account and looking up the mac address of the machine.

I do want to find a way to disable this ‘security’ mechanism, though.

Ah... you can disable the drive encryption: https://www.wikihow.com/Turn-Off-BitLocker (among other places).

Yes, iirc something like https://asm.ms.

However coming at me unexpectedly, the questions I have are

1. Is this a spoof site from a virus I inadvertently picked up?

2. Why do I even have to do this if I have no recollection of requesting c drive encryption in the first place?

3. Why is this not somehow automated?

4. Why is there no mindless flowchart procedure for recovery which involves bitlocker?
