ALICE, Texas (AP) — In 1977, Associated Press reporter James W. Mangan’s exclusive interview with a South Texas election judge who detailed certifying false votes for Lyndon B. Johnson nearly three decades earlier made headlines across the country.
With the win by an 87-vote margin in the 1948 Democratic primary runoff, Johnson, then a congressman, easily defeated his Republican opponent to take a seat in the U.S. Senate, and he eventually ascended to the presidency.
Mangan spent three years pursuing the story, which pulled back the curtain on the victory that had drawn suspicions ever since election officials in rural Jim Wells County announced the discovery of uncounted votes in ballot box known as Box 13.

Headlines across the U.S. that accompanied the story included: “Polling Official: Phony Votes Stole ’48 Runoff for LBJ”; “LBJ’s election to Senate ‘stolen’”; “Texan Claims Fix in LBJ Election.”

I’d forgotten this, the story was based on a former Texas Democratic election judge who recalled how he knowingly lied and certified Johnson’s win for Texas senator as legit.
He had first hand knowledge that 200 persons who didn’t vote were just added to Johnson’s total. The dopes even forgot and put the names in alphabetically and they still got away with it.
He admits wrongness now and that he did it for his party.
President Kennedy laughingly referred to LBJ as “Landside Lyndon”.
Coke Stevenson won the 1948 primary that LBJ stole. He was a Conservative.
There was a tale of the Texican, Manuel, who came sobbing to his neighbor. The neighbor asked why Manuel was weeping, and the explanation was, “My father, who died years ago, came back to vote for Senor Johnson, but he did not even stop by our house to say hello.”
Just a reminder that the Dems have a long sordid history of stealing elections......a former Texas Democratic election judge recalled how he knowingly lied and certified Johnson’s crooked win for Texas senator as legit. .......200 persons who didn’t vote were just crookedly added to Johnson’s total. The dopes even put the names in alphabetically and still got away with it.
The election official admits wrongness now and said that he did it for his party.
“I did it for my party.......just obeying orders.”
That’s what they said in Nazi Germany.
One last question. Where were the Republicans?
the best thing about the left vs the right is . deep down inside being narcissists, they all really hate each other. And...when things go south, they won't hesitate to start backstabbing each other
Luis Salas should have kept his mouth shut. Questioning the results of an election can get you shipped off to the gulag.
The narcissistic lefties all really hate each other.
And when things look bad for them, “survival” kicks in.
The Me-Firsters won’t hesitate to start backstabbing each other.
Yes, and they've gotten even bolder today, knowing that a corrupt judicial system, a feckless Supreme Court, a newsmedia serving as a praetorian guard for corrupt politicians, and a brainwashed public will only persecute anyone who questions their approved election.
The Republicans weren’t involved. This was the Democrat runoff. Johnson won the general election over the Republican by a genuine landslide (66% to 33%)
Thx.
GOP didn’t much exist in Texas in 1948. They also didn’t have a majority in the Senate to deny seating LBJ in January 1949.
And they said Nixon was a crook.
My how things have changed there.
Some people on FR are so anxious to smear Republicans they make fools out of themselves, as you did in this case.
LBJ was one of the top 8 Worst Presidents.
Why dont you just lie down, take two aspirins, and call an exorcist.
And I believe the “found” voters had voted in alphabetical order.
I mean, LBJs ambition was funny, but it was nothing to lose your head over…
I certainly wouldn’t give the AP any kudos for this report. They’re nearly a century too late with the story.
