We never used to have coyotes, but with all the development over the last 30 years they have become less fearful of people. That's what got our pup.

Coyotes were native to mainly the desert southwest, the near elimination of wolves across the United States provided them an undisputed resource rich territory they expanded through like wildfire.
Wolves will go out of their way to kill coyotes, their (coyote) limited pre-European contact territory border was essentially the line that marked the ability of a given land areas prey animals to support wolf sized communal packs vs coyote size reproductive pairs.
Wolves will soon be pushing them out of the Pacific Northwest wild areas. The coyotes are definitely way better at adapting to close human interaction and exploiting suburban and urban environments though.
We never used to have coyotes

Same here, lots now in this rural area. They are bold, a big dog coyote followed my nephew to his tree stand! But the injuries suffered by LL’s little dog sound more like raccoon. They are wicked fighters and will tear up a dog.
