Despite the massive ignorance of Ukrainian politics displayed here, Zelinski is a political figurehead - the real power is held by the head of the unelected Presidential Administration, Andre Yermak who is a Russian operative, whose father is KGB. It was Yermak who ordered the mine fields in the south cleared so Russian troops would have no problem entering from Crimea.
Zelinski is only President because he was the leader of his party, which won the majority of seats in Parliament, not because he was directly elected as in the USA.
