Never go alone.
And always leave a written hike plan behind with someone, so they know where you plan to go and when to expect you to return.
I have done lots of solo mountain hiking. Colorado, Maine, Virginia, and Switzerland. The thing is to plan well and know your limits. I can think of at least three times I had to bail and get off the mountain because conditions were no longer safe. I don’t see anything wrong with the way this fellow handled himself.
