“The Night Chicago Died”.
In 1974, the British pop group Paper Lace released a single, The Night Chicago Died, about Al Capone and his famous shootout with Chicago police. After the single hit No. 1 in the United States, the band wrote to Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley enquiring about the possibility of receiving a heroes’ welcome and an official proclamation. Paper Lace promptly received a reply from the Mayor’s Office on City Hall stationery:
“We might persuade Paper Lace and the author of The Night Chicago Died to come to Chicago and jump in the Chicago River,” it read, “placing their heads under water three times and surfacing twice. The lyrics are the greatest assemblage of garbage ever to be published. Thank you for contacting us. Pray tell us, are you nuts?”
There was some horrific music during that period that was really popular. It was odd because it was the also famous for really good music especially Southern Rock and what we call Yacht Rock now. I think Yacht Rock was called Country Rock(Eagles, Pure Prairie League, Poco, etc) back then.
I really hated that song, but I hated One Night In Bangkok even more.
